The title carries actions, assertions of practice. The ‘I’, deceptively confident, for in it resides the fragility of taking a position in the world. Daring to make, to inscribe questions into the brittle skin of the contemporary moment—the treacherous surface which only the truly hopeful traverse and deign to leave an impression. Illuminating fleeting impressions prone to be erased, reframed, redacted, and reimagined. Offering tentative visual propositions riddled with resplendent aural contradictions. Erasing the violence of certitudes, only to rewrite them in moments of doubt. Eliding the commonsensical in a hope of arriving at a place of the consequential, re-imagining the fables of the forgotten to erase the noise of the fashionably relevant.
I write, erase, rewrite. Erase again, and then comes from the place of not being right, from a place of not knowing, from the place of questions. The propositions offered here make sense only if their iterative spirit carried in the mantra of ‘again’ is taken seriously. Engaging in iterative processes, not as a rigid routine, but as an attempt to unearth, reconstruct, and reclaim what is vital, beautiful, and captivating about the present.
Astrid, Annelieke, Bruno, Désirée, Hangfeng, Janos, and Michael unfold their artistic research in and through cinema before us, with the brave hope that we will join them in rewriting their questions and erasing the answers.
With lots of care,
Nduka
